The Department of Health has confirmed 5,419 new cases of Covid-19.
There has been a decrease in both Covid-19 hospitalisations and ICU entries.
There are 528 people in hospital who have tested positive for the virus, down 17 since yesterday. Of these 110 are in ICU, down seven.
This comes as the National Public Health Emergency advised the Government that there should be a return to some restrictions, including reduced capacity at indoor events and an earlier closing time for the hospitality sector.
The Government has also delayed the introduction of PCR and antigen testing for air and sea passengers arriving into Ireland until Sunday. It was initially scheduled to be rolled out today.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan issued a statement yesterday in which he warned that while recent progress reducing Covid-19 transmission was "very welcome", the level of disease in the community was "still a concern".
Meanwhile, Northern Ireland has reported a further four deaths of patients who had previously tested positive for Covid-19. Another 1,908 cases of the virus were also notified.

現在のEU各国は、異常なほどの数値を連日出しています（USもそうですが）。そうした中で、オミクロン株が全世界へ広がる勢いで感染者を増やし始めています。南アフリカでは既にオミクロン株が感染者の70％以上を占めていると伝えられています。このクリスマス・シーズン、年末年始シーズンは過酷な状況に陥るのでしょう。
しかし、私たちは、従来から徹底している感染防止策を強い気持ちで継続するべきです。マスク会食などノーです。ウィズ・コロナなどの表現もノーです（ゼロ・コロナです）。接触感染・飛沫感染はもとより、エアロゾル感染を侮ってはならないし、今回のオミクロン株は空気感染に近いものがあるのかも知れません（私見）。そうした想定の元に徹底した対策を継続しましょう！ 友人たちとの飲み会もオアズケです。家族と一同に会することも同様です。
