Superior Ukrainian tactics and clever use of available weaponry meant the decimation of the elite Russian 155th Naval Infantry Brigades in the Vuhledar sector in recent days.

The formation, fielding around 2,000 men when at full strength, had been deployed to attempt to establish a forward fighting position that could be used as springboard to threaten Bakhmut from the south.

Terrain around Vuhledar is mostly flat and open, ideal for armored warfare, prompting Russia to deploy T-80 and T-90 tanks attached to the 90th Tank Regiment. From their starting positions, Russian units had to cross a long stretch of open terrain, at the other end of which were fixed Ukrainian positions. Unbeknownst to the Russians, Ukraine had mapped out that open stretch to the centimeter, and had it zeroed in with its artillery.

In an incomprehensible blunder, the Russian commander in the area, Lieutenant General Rustam Muradov, simply ordered his tanks and infantry to rush forward, tanks as spearheads, headlong into fixed point defence positions. As Russian units reached a pre-determined point, Ukrainian gunners deployed a secret weapon: artillery-delivered anti-vehicle mines. The leading units hit the mines, creating chaos down the line, and then howitzers and mortars opened up, pulverizing man and machine alike. and prompting the remaining units to scatter. Since Russian troops are not allowed to retreat without a direct order, the vast majority were either shot by their own or went missing.
