The Dutch government announced on Good Friday that it would temporarily suspend the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccination for people under the age of 60 after reports that very few people had developed unusual blood clots after receiving the vaccine.
The Dutch move comes three days after German authorities also stopped using the AstraZeneca vaccine in people under the age of 60, citing new concerns about unusual blood clots reported in a small number of those who received the injections.
Earlier on Good Friday, a Dutch organization that monitors the side effects of vaccines announced that it had received five reports of major blood clots with low levels of blood on the platelets after vaccines. Experts say that it’s now an extremely serious situation.
All the cases occurred between 7 and 10 days after vaccination and all those affected were women aged 25 to 65 years.
It’s understood that the organization said that around 400,000 people in the Netherlands were vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine during the period in which the five cases were reported.
